Boric criticizes elections in Nicaragua: “They are held without freedom”

Chilean President Gabriel Boric harshly criticized the results of the municipal elections that were held in Nicaragua last Sunday.

"Of 153 mayorships ‘in dispute’, Ortega won 153. An electoral process that is carried out without freedom, reliable electoral justice and imprisoned or banned opponents is not a democracy anywhere in the world"He published this Wednesday on his social networks.

"We will continue to push in multilateral spaces the need to guarantee in Nicaragua the reestablishment of the democratic guarantees and freedoms of a rule of law and an end to all attacks against opponents."added the president.

It is not the first time that Boric has been openly critical of Daniel Ortega, who has been in power for more than 15 years and has been denounced for authoritarianism, electoral fraud and human rights violations.

In September, during the 70th United Nations General Assembly, the Chilean president called on "contribute" with the liberation of the political prisoners of the Central American country.

Ortega responded by calling him "lapdog" and questioned his authority to demand the release of political prisoners in the Central American country.

"As if there were only prisoners in Nicaragua! They have a glass roof. They have prisoners in their house. They have a constitutional coup regime, terrorist and they speak that way"Ortega reproached.

From before arriving at La Moneda, even during his career as a deputy, Boric was always very critical of the authoritarian governments of Latin America and has defended human rights above all else.

"It really bothers me when you’re from the left and then you condemn the violation of human rights in Yemen or El Salvador, but you can’t talk about Venezuela or Nicaragua."expressed in September in a discussion at Columbia University, in the United States.
