Bodø/Glimt Defeats Sporting Lisbon 3-0 in Champions League Round of 16

Bodø/Glimt defeated Sporting Lisbon 3-0 on Wednesday evening at Aspmyra Stadium in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League Round of 16. The decisive victory establishes them as the first Norwegian club to ever win a match in the knockout stages of the tournament.

Playing entirely within their domestic offseason, the Arctic Circle club extended an unprecedented five-match Champions League winning streak. The result positions Bodø/Glimt favorably ahead of the return leg scheduled for Tuesday, March 17, 2026, at the Estádio José Alvalade in Portugal.

Sondre Brunstad Fet opened the scoring in the 30th minute by converting a penalty kick. Ole Didrik Blomberg doubled the advantage in the 46th minute just before the halftime whistle. Kasper Høgh secured the 3-0 final margin in the second half, finishing an assist provided by Jens Petter Hauge.

The squad relied on a high-intensity, physical style of play to dictate the match. Bodø/Glimt currently leads all Champions League teams in total distance covered per match. This relentless pacing overpowered a Sporting side visiting a town of approximately 55,000 residents in Northern Norway.

The result sent a shockwave through European sports, as the club continues to overcome significant financial and geographical disparities. The win over Sporting follows a string of upsets against heavily favored opponents. The Norwegian side previously defeated Manchester City 3-1, Atletico Madrid 2-1, and eliminated Inter Milan 5-2 on aggregate.

The Norwegian top-flight league, the Eliteserien, does not begin its new season until mid-March 2026. The winner of the aggregate tie between Bodø/Glimt and Sporting CP will advance to the Champions League Quarter-Finals to face either Arsenal or Bayer Leverkusen.
