Boca Juniors Seeks Big Win Against Auckland City for FIFA Club World Cup

The Boca Juniors are in a tight spot. After the second round of the Club World Cup, they’re trailing behind Benfica with a goal difference of 3-4. This has them rooting for a big Bayern win over Benfica in the final round, which could make their own path to the knockout stage a little easier. If Bayern can take down Benfica, the Boca Juniors might not need to score as many goals against Auckland City to advance.

But if they do need to score big, there’s hope. They’ve done it before. Like in 2021, when they thrashed Central Córdoba 8-1 in the Argentine league and Vélez Sarsfield 7-1 in the Copa da Liga Argentina. Or back in 2007, when they needed to beat Bolívar by four goals to advance in the Libertadores group stage. They ended up winning 7-0. That team, led by Juan Román Riquelme, who’s now the club’s president, went on to win the Libertadores that year and made it to the Club World Cup final, where they lost to Milan.

The Boca Juniors have a history of big wins. In 2006, they beat San Lorenzo 7-1. In 2007, they took down Banfield 6-0, and in 2004, they did the same to Vélez. They’ve even had some big wins against weaker teams, like a 6-0 victory over Alvarado in the Argentine Cup in 2018. And way back in 1942, they had their biggest win ever, an 11-1 thrashing of Tigre.

The Biggest Wins

Some of the biggest wins in Boca Juniors history include:

  • 11-1 vs. Tigre in 1942
  • 8-1 vs. Central Córdoba in 2021
  • 7-1 vs. Vélez Sarsfield in 2021
  • 7-1 vs. San Lorenzo in 2006
  • 7-0 vs. Bolívar in 2007
  • 6-0 vs. Banfield in 2007
  • 6-0 vs. Vélez in 2004
  • 6-0 vs. Alvarado in 2018

The Boca Juniors are hoping to add another big win to this list and advance to the knockout stage of the Club World Cup.
