Boca gave a historic blow in the women’s Libertadores

Boca struck a historic blow in the women’s Copa Libertadores: for the first time since the tournament was played, an Argentine team managed to eliminate a Brazilian team, which is also the current champion, the mighty Corinthians. The 2-1 that the Gladiators achieved served them to qualify for the semifinals of the contest, which is taking place in Ecuador.

At the Rodrigo Paz Delgado stadium in Quito, Boca opened the account through Kishi Núñez, although in that same first half Adriana scored the tie for the Brazilians. When it seemed that Corinthians, winner of three of the last five continental tournaments, was deployed in search of victory, Estefanía Palomar appeared to achieve the highly celebrated goal of the team led by Jorge Martínez.

Boca thus continues its march in search of a title that it never achieved. He was first in Group B of the first phase (he beat Defensor from Uruguay and Ñañas from Ecuador and tied with Ferroviaria from Brazil), and now he took out one of the candidates, who had just won four of the last tournaments in Brazil. In this edition, Corinthians had been second in group A behind Deportivo Cali from Colombia.

The Xeneizes, the only Argentine representatives in the Cup, qualified after becoming champions of the 2021 Women’s Championship when they beat UAI Urquiza 5-2 in the final. In addition, those led by Jorge Martínez have just been crowned two-time champions after also winning the 2022 trophy (they beat the same rival 2-1 in La Bombonera) and also qualifying for the 2023 Copa Libertadores.

Boca had six appearances in the Cup (2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2020). His best performance was in his first season when he finished with a third place finish. Then they could not get out of the group stage until 2020 when they reached the quarterfinals and fell to América de Cali 2-1. In the semifinals, Boca will meet the winner of the match played later by Deportivo Cali and Ferroviaria.
