Boca and Barcelona will honor Maradona with a friendly match in December

The first anniversary of the death of Diego Maradona approaches and the meaningful memory takes shape in different ways, one of which will be a soccer game between two of the clubs that were part of the Fiorito magician’s career. Will be on December 14, when Boca meets Barcelona of Spain in a tribute meeting to the historic Ten, to be held in Riyadh, capital of Saudi Arabia, as confirmed by the Catalan club on Monday.

The friendly will take place at Mrsool Park stadium, with capacity for 25 thousand people, 19 days after one year of the death of the Argentine star in the San Andrés neighborhood, in the Buenos Aires town of Tigre.

Maradona wore the shirt of both clubs and went from Boca to Barcelona in mid-1982, after the World Cup in Spain, when its transfer was made official at 1,200 million pesetas (today equivalent to 7.2 million euros), a record figure for the time.

In Boca, Diego had two cycles: the first in the 1981/82 season when the team won the 1981 Metropolitan Championship, while the second was in 1995-1998, a stage that also marked his retirement as a professional footballer. In Barcelona he played two seasons, 1982/83 and 1983/84, in which he played a total of 58 games and won three titles: the King’s Cup, the League Cup and the Spanish Super Cup.

It will be the first cross between the two clubs in the Middle East, although they have already met another ten times, the last for the Joan Gamper Trophy in Barcelona, in 2018, in a match that ended 3-0 in favor of the Spanish with a goal from Lionel Messi. In the general history, Boca won five times, Barcelona four and tied the rest. The last victory of the Argentine club (3-2) was in a friendly played on August 11, 1999 in Alicante.
