BMW, Mercedes, Auto Giants Form Alliance for Common Open-Source Vehicle Software Ecosystem

Cars today are way more than just engines and wheels. Think of them as rolling computers. Drivers now care deeply about the tech inside their vehicles. This big shift is pushing major car makers to rethink how they build cars. They want to make sure the software is just as powerful as the horsepower.

Gone are the days when car buyers only looked at speed or fuel efficiency. Now, things like smart driving helpers and staying connected to the cloud are super important. The future of cars will rely even more on smart software. It’s a whole new world for the automotive industry.

Big Names Join Forces for Core Software

Eleven major players in the car world just inked a deal. They agreed to work together on open-source software. This partnership aims for faster, better, and more secure software development. It also sets up an open, shared system for everyone involved.

A recent statement pointed out why this is crucial. Vehicle software is getting more complex. So, it’s key for the industry to speed things up while keeping quality and safety high. Many parts of a car’s software aren’t even seen by the driver. These parts also don’t really make one car stand out from another.

This means these basic software pieces can be built together. This way, companies can focus their efforts on what truly makes their cars special. They can innovate on the cool features drivers actually interact with. The group is using a “code first” approach. This means they deliver ready-to-use software parts instead of just long design documents. This speeds up development and makes things more standard.

The German Association of the Automotive Industry, known as VDA, supports this team effort. The goal is to make sure the software is super safe for regular production cars.

The Companies Behind the New Software Alliance

This big project happens within the Eclipse Foundation. It’s part of something called the S-CORE project. The foundation offers a clear and independent space for development. This new software system is designed to be open. It can work with other industry standards. Plus, other European and international companies can join in and help.

The companies that signed this agreement are:

  • BMW Group
  • Continental AG
  • ETAS GmbH
  • HELLA GmbH & Co. KGaA
  • Mercedes-Benz AG
  • Qorix
  • Robert Bosch GmbH
  • Valeo Brain Division
  • Vector Informatik GmbH
  • Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG
  • ZF Friedrichshafen

This cooperative system can be changed or expanded. Then, it can be shared with the rest of the industry as a custom setup for mass production. This way, car makers and suppliers can put their energy into what makes their products unique. They keep the core parts shared. This creates a strong foundation for new ideas. It gives them the freedom to focus on what customers truly care about.

This important Memorandum of Understanding was signed on June 23rd. The signing happened during the 29th International Congress on Automotive Electronics (AEK). This move shows a clear path forward for how cars will be built in the future.
