Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Trey Yesavage delivered a historic performance in Game 5 of the World Series, recording 12 strikeouts against the Los Angeles Dodgers. This established a new World Series record for a rookie. The Blue Jays secured a 6-1 victory on Wednesday, October 29.
The team now holds a 3-1 lead in the best-of-seven series, standing one win away from their first franchise title since 1993.
Yesavage’s milestone on the mound followed a personal celebration. The 22-year-old had just marked his second anniversary with girlfriend Taylor Frick.
On October 9, Yesavage posted a tribute to Frick on Instagram. “Happy anniversary to the woman who completes me! You are my best friend. You always know how to put a smile on my face,” he wrote. “You fill my life with love and I am so grateful for you. You do so many things for us behind the scenes that sometimes go unnoticed, but I see them. I love you more and more each day ❤️.”
Frick reciprocated the sentiment, commenting, “I love you so much, my sweet boy, a million anniversaries to come ❤️.”
The couple began dating in October 2023, having met at East Carolina University where Yesavage played baseball and Frick was a cheerleader.
Following Yesavage’s record-setting Game 5, Frick shared her excitement on her Instagram story, saying she was “still crying.”
Yesavage has experienced a rapid ascent through the baseball ranks this year. He started the season with the Class A Dunedin Blue Jays.
He was called up to the major leagues for the first time on September 15. Frick celebrated this achievement on social media.
“An amazing person who is also really, really good at baseball,” Frick posted on Instagram at the time. “Today I feel like the proudest girlfriend in the world, I wouldn’t miss it for anything <3."In October 2024, Frick shared her own anniversary message. "My childhood self would be smiling from ear to ear if she knew one day she'd have a love like this," she wrote on Instagram. "If 'too good to be true' were a person, it would be you. 365 days being the happiest girl in the world <3." Yesavage responded, "I love you more than you imagine ❤️."Before Game 5, a video circulated showing a seemingly stoic Yesavage in the Blue Jays locker room, wearing headphones. Social media users commented that he was "LOCKED IN 🍿."However, Yesavage later clarified the scene to ESPN in a report published Thursday, October 30. "I saw something on Instagram where someone took a video of me on my phone saying I was locked in," Yesavage explained. "But I was just doomscrolling on TikTok and Instagram reels. I just try to be as relaxed as possible. I don't change anything I say to myself, but I'm also here to work. I try not to think about anything."Game 6 between the Blue Jays and Dodgers is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET on Friday, October 31, at Rogers Centre in Toronto. A potential Game 7 would also take place in Toronto on Saturday, November 1.
