Blockchain developer DFinity is suing Meta

Switzerland-based nonprofit Dfinity has reportedly filed a lawsuit in a California court against Meta. According to the company, they are seriously harmed by being linked in any way to Meta’s “filthy” history of online privacy violations.

Irreparable damage

The blockchain developer has now called the damage irreparable after Meta completed its rebranding, leading the company to adopt a new infinity logo.

Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta, said in a letter to investors last year that the name Meta was inspired by his time studying classical languages at university. Meta is the Greek word for ‘outside’.

Questioning Dfinity’s Core Mission

The complaint from Dfinity states the following:

“Any association between Dfinity and Meta would lead consumers, including users and developers, to question Dfinity’s core mission.”

Dfinity was founded in 2016 and first registered its infinity trademark in 2017. Its logo was first registered with the US Patent Office in 2018. Given that the logos are not exactly the same and there are indeed different variations in them it is not clear whether Dfinity can make a strong case.
