Blinken and Le Drian criticize Russian military activity near Ukraine

Relations between France and the United States on the one hand and Russia on the other continue to grow strained. The heads of American and French diplomacy, Antony Blinken and Jean-Yves Le Drian, spoke on Saturday of “worrying Russian military activity” in Ukraine, after the deployment of Russian troops on the Ukrainian border.

To get the message across to Moscow, Antony Blinken and Jean-Yves Le Drian also recalled “their unwavering commitment to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine”, according to a statement from the US State Department.

Capture of Crimea in 2014

France had already warned Russia on Friday against any “new attack on the territorial integrity of Ukraine” after this deployment. Washington was also concerned about Russian troop movements near Ukraine and warned Moscow against an invasion.

Russia annexed the Ukrainian peninsula from Crimea in 2014. Ukraine has also been in conflict with pro-Russian separatists in the eastern part of its territory since that date. Russia is accused by Kiev and the West of supporting the separatists militarily and financially, which it denies.
