Bitcoin logo illuminates Berlin’s iconic TV tower

Berliners were surprised by a unique display last Saturday, when the Bitcoin logo was projected onto the iconic Berliner Fernsehturm tower. The giant orange B lit up the Berlin sky. It didn’t take long before Twitter was full of photos.

The man behind the projection

The man behind the projection is Tilo, he is the CEO of an event agency hosting a blockchain conference. Tilo explained that the goal was simply to bring attention to Bitcoin. He said: “We just want to draw attention to Bitcoin! We are fans of this kind of guerrilla action and will continue to do so.”

He added that the process of setting up such light projections is relatively simple, “what you need is a mixer, power station and a special Bitcoin logo”. At the end of last year he tried to carry out a similar projection, but the equipment used was not powerful enough at the time. Now he has succeeded.

Bitcoin is more often projected onto iconic buildings

This is not the first time Bitcoin-related images or slogans have been projected onto iconic buildings. In May 2021, “Fiat is the bubble, Bitcoin is the pin” was projected onto the Bank of England in London. Tilo himself had also previously projected Bitcoin slogans onto the iconic Berlin Wall.

Tilo did warn people that these kinds of “ads” aren’t technically allowed and that caution should be exercised when attempting similar impressions. So you can get into trouble if you start doing this yourself.

Despite that, Bitcoin fans were charmed by the action. It brings Bitcoin one step closer to the mainstream. However, other residents of Berlin were less happy. Some even called it light pollution.

Conclusion

In short, the display of the Bitcoin logo on the Berliner Fernsehturm tower on January 21 was a creative way to highlight Bitcoin and probably also to put his own company and conference on the map. Although the process is simple, one should be warned not to simply perform such projections themselves, as this is not permitted by law. Reaction to the display was mixed, with some celebrating it and others criticizing it. All in all, the initiator will be satisfied with the attention he has received.
