Bissegger retains lead in second Merlier win

Belgian cycling Tim Merlier, from the Alpecin-Fenix team, was the winner of the fourth stage of the Benelux Tour, held this Thursday between Aalter and Ardooie (166.1 km), while the Swiss Stefan Bissegger (EF Education), continues with the leader jersey for the third day in a row, since he was the fastest in the time trial last Tuesday.

Merlier, who used a time of 3:36:29 hours, beat Danish Mad Pedersen (Trek-Segafredo) and Dutchman Danny Van Poppel (Intermarché) in the sprint, who were second and third, respectively. With this victory, the Belgian sprinter adds his second triumph in this Tour de Benelux, thus highlighting the great season that the Alpecin-Fenix cyclist is doing, which was also the fastest in a stage of the last Giro d’Italia and another of the Tour de France.

The best Spaniards of the day were again the Movistar cyclists Lluís Mas (11th) and Iván García Cortina (17th), who fought for the sprint in the same group as Merlier. In the general there were no changes, Bissegger kept the leader’s jersey for the third consecutive day, and leads by 13 and 20 seconds to the Danish Kasper Asgreen (Quick Step) and Australian Luke Durbrigde (Team BikeExchange), who are second and third in the general classification, respectively. The fifth stage of this Friday, which will run between the towns Riemst and Bilzen, with a total of 192 km, will once again have a clearly flat profile, except for some minor ‘tacks’ that will allow the fight for the stage to be sprinted again
