Bissegger beats Ganna and Dumoulin challenges Pogacar

The time trial of the UAE Tour left us with numerous conclusions despite having only a 9-kilometre course: that the indestructible Filippo Ganna is vulnerable when it comes to facing short time trials and that Tadej Pogacar is very serious in his fight to retain the title he won in 2021… although today he was beaten by another of the general favorites, a Tom Dumoulin who, at last, is back in the cycling elite.

The 9-kilometre time trial route starting and finishing in Ajman left us cyclists flying in the first half of the route, with an average speed of up to 60 km/h, while it took them a little longer to maintain speed in the direction contrary to the path they were facing.

Dane Mikkel Bjerg was the first of the favorites to win the stage to register his time with a mark of 10:07. However, the joy of the UAE Emirates cyclist did not last long, since the Swiss Stefan Bissegger smashed his record with a time of 9:43, 24 seconds better, at an average of 55.5 km/h, after riding 61 km /h during the first 4.5 kilometers. A time that not even the world champion Filippo Ganna was able to overcome, since the Italian passed one second from the Swiss at the intermediate point, but who took the second part of the time trial to a long time with the wind against reach the finish line with 9:50, six seconds behind Bissegger

Among the favorites for the general classification, the closest to Bissegger’s times was the Russian Aleksandr Vlasov, who passed Bisseger by four seconds at the intermediate point but finished third at the finish line, 25 seconds behind the Swiss with a time of 10: 08, while Bardet arrived with a time of 10:29 and Pello Bilbao made a good time to stop the clock at 10:23, before Joao Almeida stopped the clock at 10:05.

The last two champions of the UAE Tour remained to be seen in action, as they came out almost in succession to face the time trial. Adam Yates gave up ten seconds to Bissegger at the first intermediate point, while Tadej Pogacar stopped the clock in 4:31 at 4.5km, 5 seconds behind the Swiss. The differences widened even further in the second part of the time trial, with Yates arriving in 10:12 and losing 11 seconds to a Tadej Pogacar who was the best of the general favorites with a time of 10:01, 18 seconds of Bissegger but ahead of Almeida by four seconds.

However, Pogacar could not complete his blow to the general classification among the favorites as Tom Dumoulin asserted his skills in flat time trials. The Dutchman from Jumbo-Visma was, in this way, the best of the men in the general classification after stopping the clock at the finish line with 9:57, four seconds better than Pogacar. Despite the efforts of the sprinters (the leader Philipsen finished tenth in the time trial at 28 seconds), the Swiss Stefan Bissegger is the new leader of the UAE Tour before the arrival of the mountain this Wednesday in the fourth stage, with a route of 181 kilometers between Al Fujairah and the demanding final climb to Jebel Jais, with 20.6 kilometers of ascent at 5.4%.
