Big move to stop racist abuse in Edgbaston, undercover crowd watchers to be deployed

India vs England 2nd T20: The second T20 between England and India will be played at Edgbaston on Saturday and the match will be monitored by undercover crowd-style observers to prevent racist abuse. This was confirmed by the Warwickshire County Cricket Club on Thursday.

<p style="text alignment: justify;"England won the rescheduled fifth Test against India by chasing 378 before lunch on the final day, scoring 259/3 on day four. However, there were reports of racial comments made by a section of the audience in this thriller.

Racial humiliation issues during the Edgbaston Test were initially highlighted on Twitter by former Yorkshire cricketer Azim Rafiq, who was later investigated by West Midlands Police.

Warwickshire Chief Executive Stuart Kane said: "Earlier this week, nearly 100,000 people watched one of the most exciting Test matches in recent memory. But we are disappointed by the racist abuse experienced by some of the fans who followed India into the Eric Hollies stand."

added, "These unacceptable actions by a small number of people have affected a spectacular sporting event and the people responsible do not deserve to be part of the cricket family. We have to work hard as a venue, as well as for people to take responsibility."

For Saturday’s T20, Warwickshire confirmed that undercover football crowd-style observers would be stationed in Edgbaston to listen for abusive behavior and report it for immediate action. He added that police presence at matches would be increased to allow faster handling of such incidents and greater chances of a successful prosecution.

The club also said that in future matches all fans would be encouraged to report abuse via the Edgbaston app.

said, "In the meantime, I’d like to apologize to the fans who were subjected to racist abuse. Everyone at Edgbaston will work hard to make it better and will be welcomed with open arms in the future."
