Internazionale has conquered the Supercoppa Italiana for the sixth time thanks to a goal in the very last minute of extra time.

In the Italian version of the Johan Cruijff scale, the reigning national champion took on Juventus, the winner of the cup, at home. Inter drew the longest straw in San Siro thanks to a goal from Chilean Alexis Sánchez: 2-1.

At Inter, Orange internationals Stefan de Vrij and Denzel Dumfries were given a basic place. Matthijs de Ligt did not play for Juventus. He is serving a suspension after his red card in last Sunday’s league match against AS Roma.

The home team started the game as favorites. Inter are leading the league and are on a good run of eight wins in a row. Juventus, which is fifth, won the Supercoppa Italiana for the ninth time last year.

Juventus ahead

Inter eagerly started the game, looking for the first prize of the year. De Vrij had a chance early on, but he aimed just wide. Lautaro Martínez also had a good opportunity to take Inter ahead; he too missed.

On the other hand, after 25 minutes it was hit for Juventus. Weston McKennie headed in a cross from Álvaro Morata, not really bothered by De Vrij.

Via a penalty, which Inter had wrongly begged earlier in the game, the home team equalized. Striker Edin Džeko went to the ground in a duel with Mattia De Sciglio, after which Martínez flawlessly rammed the penalty into the top right corner.

After the break, Dumfries was very close to a goal. His header ended up over the post, goalkeeper and crossbar. Neither team created any great opportunities in regular time.

In extra time, the game seemed to be heading for penalties, until Juve defender Alex Sandro made a blunder in the defense. The ball landed through Sandro’s chest via Matteo Darmian at the feet of Sánchez, who gave Inter the first prize of the year.
