The president of the United States, Joe Biden, publicly recognized this Friday his seventh granddaughter, a four-year-old girl that his son Hunter had with an Arkansas woman, after Republican criticism for not having done so sooner.

This is not a political issue, this is a family issue,” Trump said in a statement to People magazine about the girl, named Navy Joan Roberts.

Biden said he and his wife Jill want only “the best” for all of their grandchildren, including Navy.

According to an anonymous source familiar with the situation cited by People, a dispute over child support between Hunter Biden and Lunden Roberts, resolved last month, had affected the way the Bidens interacted with their granddaughter.

It must be remembered that until a few weeks ago there was a rather controversial legal process between Navy’s parents. As grandparents, the Bidens are following the Hunter line,” the source said.

The Democratic president had been criticized by Republicans, who said not recognizing Navy went against his public image as a family man.

Earlier this month, Republican lawmaker Elise Stefanik called Biden “cold, heartless, selfish and cowardly” for not including the girl and called the situation an “inexcusable shame” in a statement to Britain’s Daily Mail newspaper.

DNA tests confirmed the paternity of Hunter Biden. The girl, apparently, has not met her father or her grandparents.

Hunter Biden, who has battled drug addiction and is currently embroiled in legal trouble over tax charges and illegal possession of a firearm, has four other children.
