Biden calls Boric and calls the elections in Chile an “example”

The president of the United States, Joe Biden, congratulated this Thursday in a telephone call to the elected president of Chile, Gabriel Boric, for his electoral victory and described the elections in that country as a "example" for the region and the world.

Biden "applauded Chile’s free and fair elections as a powerful example for the region and the world"White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki said in a statement.

At just 35 years old and with more than 4.6 million votes, Boric became the youngest and most voted president-elect in the history of Chile on December 19.

A staunch critic of the neoliberal model installed during the military dictatorship (1973-1990), Boric promises a profound agenda of changes to expand the role of the State towards a welfare model similar to that of Europe, with an environmentalist, feminist and regionalist accent.

The spokeswoman indicated that the US leader stressed the importance of cooperation between the two countries to "promote an ecological and equitable recovery" of the covid-19 pandemic and face the "existential threat" representing climate change.

Also, they talked about their "shared commitment" with social justice, democracy, human rights and inclusive growth.

On the other hand, the president offered, on behalf of the United States, his deepest condolences to the people of Chile for the tragic death of Valentina Orellana-Peralta, a 14-year-old girl who on December 23 was accidentally hit by a bullet fired by a police officer during an operation in a store in Los Angeles.
