Besiktas Plots January Move for Sporting’s Morita, Coach’s Top Target

Turkish club Besiktas is intensifying its pursuit of Japanese midfielder Hidemasa Morita for the January transfer window, capitalizing on his recent lack of playing time and injury woes at Sporting Lisbon.

Besiktas reportedly views Morita’s sparse 633 minutes across 14 matches this season as a key advantage in potential negotiations. Coach Sergen Yalçin has specifically requested the 30-year-old midfielder, according to Turkish outlet ‘Sabah Spor’.

Morita’s current contract with Sporting is set to expire in June 2026.

Despite an earlier “gentlemen’s agreement” allowing him to remain with Sporting until the end of the current season, no discussions for a contract extension are currently underway.

Morita’s recent struggles are attributed to multiple muscular injuries, which have hindered his ability to maintain consistent playing time. He aims to recover his form to participate in the 2026 World Cup, hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada.

His reduced role at Sporting also coincides with the rise of 18-year-old João Simões. Simões has frequently partnered Morten Hjulmand in Sporting’s central midfield.

Morita joined Sporting in 2022, transferring from Santa Clara for €3.45 million, approximately $3.76 million.
