Well, that certainly wasn’t in the script. Manchester City, usually so dominant, faced an unexpected exit from the FIFA Club World Cup this week. The reigning champions fell 4-3 to Saudi club Al-Hilal in a wild round-of-16 clash. Star midfielder Bernardo Silva didn’t hide his deep disappointment after the final whistle.
Silva spoke plainly about the team’s feelings. He admitted everyone in the squad was very upset. They had hoped to go much further, with big dreams for the competition. But football can be a tricky game, and sometimes the other team is just better. Silva gave full credit to Al-Hilal, saying they truly deserved their victory.
He pointed out that Al-Hilal proved to be a strong team, packed with talented individual players. They caused City a lot of problems on the pitch. While City managed to score three goals and even felt they could have had five or six, the real issue was at the other end. Silva explained that City struggled to handle Al-Hilal’s speed and direct attacks.
The plan was to control Al-Hilal’s quick moves and stop them from running into dangerous spaces. But Al-Hilal broke free far too often. Just one or two passes from them could create a clear chance. Silva stressed that when an opponent is allowed to run freely, it spells trouble. That’s exactly what happened. He felt City needed more focus and better organization when they lost the ball, especially when facing counter-attacks.
