Benfica President Rui Costa wrapped up his re-election campaign by vigorously defending the club’s financial stability against political criticism and outlining ambitious plans for growth in membership and revenue.
Addressing concerns, Costa dismissed ongoing financial discussions as “merely for political terms.” He asserted that the club has never faced financial fair-play issues nor required bank waivers.
“No player, athlete, employee, club, or supplier says that Benfica owes them money,” Costa told supporters. He insisted the club is “very well financially and will get better.”
Costa committed to reaching approximately $535 million (500 million euros) in revenue. He noted the club’s revenue has increased by 11% annually during his current mandate.
The president also laid out plans to expand the “Benfica family,” aiming to boost club membership from the current 400,000 to 500,000. This goal is set for the next four years.
Costa pledged an unwavering commitment to on-field success. “I will give my life so that, as soon as possible, we have the fourth star on our jersey,” he declared.
He criticized rival candidates for promising specific numbers of titles. Costa emphasized working diligently for “more titles, to be more ambitious and to go further.”
Costa concluded his campaign in Caldas da Rainha, thanking supporters for an emotional reception. He spoke of the “immense love” for Benfica that drives his leadership.
His speech centered on continuity, ambition, responsibility, and professionalism. Costa stated he is prepared to continue leading the club, having “built this wonderful team for the next four years.”
