Benfica faces major injury crisis for European League trip to Sweden

Portuguese handball club Benfica is grappling with a significant injury crisis ahead of its critical European League match in Sweden, potentially jeopardizing its campaign.

The team, known as “the Eagles,” is set to face an opponent in Karlskrona, Sweden, on Tuesday as part of the third round of Group E play.

Coach Jota González acknowledged the severe constraints, stating the team must play “a very complete game” due to “several absences.” He emphasized that defensive rigor and a varied offensive strategy would be key, noting that strong goalkeeping would make scoring easier against a formidable opponent.

Benfica’s difficulties were evident in their recent domestic league match against Braga, where they struggled without a full squad.

Key players missing in a prior match against ABC included Mikita Vailupau, Alexis Borges, Belone Moreira, Reinier Taboada, and Kristian Olssen. The club has not provided any details regarding the nature or severity of these players’ injuries.

Meanwhile, fellow Portuguese club FC Porto faces a different challenge as it travels to Norway to play Elverum. This match also marks the third round of the European League, with FC Porto currently leading Group D.

FC Porto goalkeeper Diogo Rêma described Elverum as a multiple-time Norwegian champion, anticipating a tough and demanding encounter. Rêma expressed confidence in his team’s ability to secure a victory if they maintain focus.
