Benfica will seek to rebound from a crushing opening defeat in the Champions League when they host Spartak Subotica on Wednesday, aiming to present a significantly improved performance.
The Portuguese club suffered a significant 61-98 loss to Gran Canaria in their first Group H match. Coach Norberto Alves stated the team hopes to offer a “more positive image” compared to that earlier game.
Alves acknowledged the difficulty of facing high-quality opponents once they establish a lead. He noted their previous game was “practically over” by the second quarter, despite Benfica winning the second half.
Forward Justice Sueing echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the need for strong defense. Sueing said the team must carry positive momentum from recent “good teamwork” into the upcoming battle.
Spartak Subotica, a Serbian team, enters the match having defeated Le Mans in their Champions League opener.
Coach Alves described Spartak as a quality opponent. He highlighted their defensive differences from Gran Canaria, noting their focus on protecting interior players and closing the paint.
He also pointed out Spartak’s American perimeter players. These athletes possess the ability to decide games on their own, a trait they demonstrated against Le Mans.
The match is scheduled for Wednesday at 8:30 PM local time at Benfica’s home stadium, the Luz.
