Benfica Candidate Noronha Lopes Secures General Manager, Promises More Wins

The race for Benfica’s presidency is heating up, and candidate João Noronha Lopes is already laying out his blueprint for the club’s future. He confirms he has a general director ready to step in, should he win the upcoming elections on October 25. Lopes aims to announce this key figure before club members cast their votes for the next four-year term. He explained that this new director will report directly to the vice-president for football, a role he has already assigned to club legend Nuno Gomes. The news about Gomes joining the potential leadership team first came out during an interview with Now.

Earlier, Lopes also named Vítor Paneira as his pick for technical director. Today, speaking with SIC Notícias, Lopes described the general director’s responsibilities. This person will “coordinate all other areas of the club.” He confirmed the individual is “chosen” and has a name, but cannot be revealed yet. This is because they are currently under contract with another team. Lopes promised the name would be made public before the elections. He added that this person knows Benfica well, possesses experience in Portuguese football, and has deep knowledge of the international game.

Noronha Lopes, 59, did not say if this general director had previously worked at Benfica. However, he spoke with great conviction about their potential impact. “Without a doubt, this will be a big acquisition,” he stated. “It will allow us to win more.” The general director will work hand-in-hand with the vice-president. Below them, a scouting manager will play a critical role. This scout will possess the necessary skills to find players earlier. This means Benfica will not simply chase market trends. Instead, the club can develop its own clear vision and secure the best talent.

Lopes believes Benfica currently pays too much for new players. He sees the club often following the market instead of creating its own strategic approach. That’s why the scouting manager’s job will be “extremely important.” It’s not just about spotting talent, he noted. Players must fit the team’s game style and have the right personality for Benfica. Lopes voiced a common concern. “What worries me,” he said, “is seeing players arrive and the first thing they say is ‘I am very happy to be here but I want to make the jump to another club.'” He made it clear: “Benfica cannot just be a stepping stone.”
