Benfica Candidate Manteigas Urges Rui Costa: Halt Coach Hiring Until Elections

Manteigas and João Neves

A storm is brewing at Benfica. The club, a titan of football, finds itself caught in a turbulent moment. It’s a time when many eyes turn to the leadership, questioning the path ahead. João Diogo Manteigas, a voice among the passionate, recently shared his thoughts online. He didn’t hold back, taking aim at the club’s board and their work over the past four years.

Manteigas sent a clear message. He wants President Rui Costa to pause. His main plea? Don’t sign a new coach before the upcoming elections. “We need to face the facts now,” Manteigas wrote on social media. “Rui Costa must own up to his responsibilities. Benfica cannot be tied down by quick decisions. Our current management isn’t meeting the hopes of our members and fans.” He also spoke directly about the coaching situation. José Mourinho is a name often heard as the next likely coach after Bruno Lage. Manteigas warned against making any fast moves. “Rui Costa should take responsibility for these ongoing mistakes,” he added. “He must not risk another. Committing the club to new contracts so close to his term’s end isn’t wise.”

Manteigas, who is also presenting his own candidacy, believes Rui Costa’s time in charge doesn’t truly show the club’s greatness. His review of the four-year period is sharp. “In four years, two coaches were let go right at the season’s start,” he pointed out. “Now, we expect a fifth coach in four sporting seasons. This comes with investments that haven’t delivered consistent results on the field. There’s an instability that just doesn’t fit with Benfica’s core values. This is true not just in football, but across all our sports.” The call for caution is loud. It highlights the deep unease about Benfica’s future as elections draw near.
