Officials at the San Luis Zoo say they are working to find a way to keep a Andean bear named Ben inside his enclosure after he escaped for the second time this month.
The bear was out for less than an hour and was found about 30 meters from its habitat, zoo officials said in a statement.
The bear, 4 years old and weighing about 90 kilos, was returned to its enclosure.
Visitors and zoo staff remained inside the buildings during Ben’s escape.
The bear first escaped on February 7 by ripping off the clips holding the stainless steel mesh to the enclosure door frame.
It didn’t go far and was out for about 90 minutes before being returned.
In response, the zoo added 450-pound tensile-strength stainless steel clips to the mesh. But Ben managed to break them on Thursday.
Zoo officials have said they are looking at alternative ways to secure the enclosure, and will seek advice from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums Advisory Group on Bear Taxa.
