Ben Simmons will undergo surgery to relieve his injured back

Ben Simmons will undergo surgery to relieve back pain caused by a herniated disc, the Brooklyn Nets said Wednesday.

The procedure will take place this Thursday. The Nets explained that they had made the decision after consulting with various back specialists.

Simmons missed the entire season. The Australian, the first pick in the 2016 draft, did not play for Philadelphia after demanding a trade, citing mental issues.

After being traded to Brooklyn in February for James Harden, his back began to give him trouble as he tried to regain his fitness.

The Nets originally indicated he had back spasms, but a herniated disc was later diagnosed. Simmons eventually returned to practice and hoped to make his postseason debut, but the Nets ruled that out because he experienced more pain.

Simmons will undergo a microdiscectomy, a procedure in which a fragment of the disc is removed.

The Nets indicated they will provide an update after the surgery.
