A significant seizure of cocaine has been made in the port of Antwerp, Belgium, with a container holding 500 kilos of the substance being taken into custody. This container arrived on a ship that had originated from the port of Montevideo, according to reports from the Prosecutor’s Office. The ship, however, did not travel directly to its destination. Instead, it made stops at several ports along the way, a detail that has introduced complexity into the investigation.
Investigation Details
The case is currently in the investigation phase, with authorities working to piece together the events surrounding the container’s journey. A key point of interest is the ship’s route, which included multiple stops before reaching Belgium. As Prosecutor’s Office director Javier Benech noted, “The container could have been contaminated in other ports.” This suggestion implies that the cocaine might not have been loaded in Montevideo but could have been added during one of the ship’s stops.
Evidence and Speculation
There is a strong suspicion that the seals on the container were compromised, which supports the theory that the cocaine was added at a point after the container’s initial departure. “There is a quite founded suspicion that the seals were violated, so it is likely to have been charged at some other point,” Benech explained. The investigation is ongoing, and as such, the authorities are being cautious about releasing too much information, aiming to avoid compromising the case. The focus now is on unraveling the exact chain of events and identifying those responsible for the shipment of the illegal substance.
