Cazoo Baskonia entered the match with the high of victory against Anadolu Efes. Players celebrated by visiting the celebrated Salt Bae restaurant, specializing in red meat with the trappings of a head chef sprinkling salt with style. And, for style, that of the people from Vitoria in the first two quarters (33-52). The entries of Birsen and Jekiri in the local starting five surprised while the Catalan coach of Cazoo gave an award to Marinkovic, who is ruled out in the ACB League as soon as he is one of the stars against Anadolu. By the way, The discarded in Istanbul was Dani Díez.
The two teams, accustomed to scoring a lot, started very poorly (0-1, min. 2). Hommes was charged very quickly with two personal fouls and Peñarroya had to take him to the bench (5-5, min. 5). Enoch also left the duel with a blow to the eyebrow with consequent bleeding. They had to put some staples in, although he would return later. Fenerbahçe lost a lot of balls and the Basques put their boots on in assists. The Ottomans survived thanks to the rebound (14/7 in the first ten minutes), but they made many losses and Baskonia went 13-21 at the end of the first act. He had, at that point, eight assists.
Pierre returned after his injury and was in charge of covering Howard. But the American nailed two quick three-pointers to his face. After a 9-0 run favorable to those from the Bosphorus, Baskonia responded with a 0-10. The rebound evened out and the people from Vitoria began to really stretch the rubber (25-41, min. 16). The most prominent, offensively, were Henry and Costello. Hommes saw a technique for protesting although the distances continued to be maintained (27-48, min. 17). A final tap-off from Enoch, almost at the buzzer, left Baskonia 19 points ahead at halftime.
The second part was for the Ottoman team (37-24) with a promising start by Kotsar. But there was a 12-4 run that dangerously brought the locals closer. Mahmutoglu, Guduric, Jekiri and Calathes (who would end with a double double) put fear into the body of the Basques (56-60, min. 27). Markus Howard was covered two against one. Luckily there was a jerk at the last minute, with a 0-7 run that left things at 56-67 with ten to go to conclude the commitment. The rotations were shorter than on other occasions since Kurucs or Raieste did not play.
In minute 38, those from Peñarroya already had 21 assists. They had gone the first three minutes of the final quarter without scoring but the Turks also got stuck after 63-72. In the last minute, Hommes made two key free throws, Thompson made a mistake by making an unforced attacking foul but Itoudis’s team was unable to finish off the Cazoo (70-76 at the end). It is clear that they are not the same without Wilbekin but it is also true that the Baskonistas have been playing excellent basketball in recent weeks and are capable of beating anyone. Now we have to change the chip to receive Fuenlabrada on Sunday at the Buesa Arena.
