Barcelona’s sporting director Deco made it clear: Nico Williams wants to join the club. In an interview, Deco stated that the club will try to sign the winger. He said: “Nico and other players want to come. If the circumstances are right, we’ll try to make it happen. We’ve had our eyes on him since last season.”
Deco also mentioned that Nico’s friendship with Lamine Yamal won’t be a factor in the decision. “Being friends is a plus, but we’re not running a friendship club here. We’re trying to win games.” He emphasized the importance of harmony in the team, saying they have a good locker room and want to keep it that way.
When asked about the signing of Joan GarcÃa, Deco explained that it’s about planning for the future. He used the example of Liverpool signing Mamardashvili despite having Alisson. “If we have players in their 30s, we need to think about the next generation. Last season, Ter Stegen was injured, and we only had Iñaki Peña. We had young goalkeepers, but they were too inexperienced.” This situation raised concerns for the club, leading to the decision to sign a young goalkeeper.
As for the possibility of Ter Stegen leaving, Deco was straightforward: “When a player wants to leave, it’s hard to stop them. But that’s not the issue here. We signed Joan for the present and future. He can play tomorrow or in a few years. Everyone starts from scratch here, no one has an advantage.” Deco expressed his respect for Ter Stegen but emphasized that the decision to sign Joan was about the club’s future.
