Barça did their homework against ALBA Berlin and secured the field factor in the quarterfinal tie. A gray victory, more comfortable than expected at the end, in which the Catalans found it difficult to carburize. Almost 30 minutes of matched duel, stuck and with more failures than successes, but also serious. The Barça players, tired after the duel against Partizán on Tuesday, never lost face to the game, and they knew how to break the game at the end. In a moment of Barca lucidity and Berlin collapse, between Sanli and Kalinic they decided the clash.
Kuric’s entry into the starting five was the best sign that Jasikevicius was going to distribute minutes against Alba. After the beating in Belgrade and against the penultimate place, it seemed the ideal scenario to give more prominence to the American or to men like Da Silva, who already entered the first quarter. And Barça started well in attack, but weak in defense. Almost everything good that the Catalans did went through the hands of Vesely, who punished Koumadje a lot, taking him out of the area and scoring from medium distance. His were the first six points. Despite Laprovittola being less inspired, the Barça attack was very fluid. Not so much his defense. They had problems in the offensive rebound, allowing more possessions to ALBA and the occasional easy point. The foreign success of the Germans, with three-pointers from far away, left Barça behind at the end of the first quarter (19-21) despite having been ahead for a good part of it.
Jasikevicius (21-27) had to stop the game at the start of the second quarter. ALBA continued to be very successful from 6’75 while Barça, with the second unit, was shipwrecked in attack. As a whole, in fact, the Catalans played a poor first half. Lacking concentration, missing simple shots and letting out a few rebounds, and above all without gunpowder. With little outside success in a small volume of triples (one of six), which was obviously reflected on the scoreboard. The luck was that ALBA, with the exception of the triples (six of 12), did not punish Barça either (34-35).
Kuric’s points and the blaugrana’s ability to open up the field gave them back the lead on the scoreboard in a third quarter that followed the dynamics of the first two. Stuck, slower and with fewer possessions. Something that benefited Barça, who was not there to get excited about either. The end of the period, however, was slightly better and they reached 30 minutes with a slight advantage (50-42).
In a very fast set, with Sanli and Kalinic as protagonists, Barça broke the game (62-45). In little more than three minutes the Catalans did combine, they knew how to find Sanli on the inside and successfully penetrated before ALBA Berlin’s short circuit. And it is over. There were seven more minutes left in a game that will not be remembered for the show on the track but that helps Barça to finish, one more season, among the top four in the regular season.
