Brock Nelson scored 1:22 into overtime to secure a 3-2 victory for the Colorado Avalanche over the Washington Capitals on Sunday. The win makes the Avalanche the first team to officially clinch a spot in the 2025-26 Stanley Cup Playoffs, while also serving as the backdrop for a historic milestone in professional sports as Washington’s Alex Ovechkin reached 1,000 combined career goals.
Ovechkin tied the game at 2-2 late in the third period with a signature left-circle one-timer on the power play. The goal, which came at the 14:17 mark, cemented his place as only the second player in NHL history alongside Wayne Gretzky to reach the 1,000-goal threshold across regular season and playoff competition. Rookie Cole Hutson recorded his first career NHL assist on the historic tally.
Washington initially took control in the first period when Justin Sourdif caught a breakaway pass and snapped a shot past Colorado goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood at 11:53. The Capitals maintained that 1-0 advantage until early in the third period when Gabriel Landeskog, returning to the Avalanche lineup for his first game since March 6, tied the contest. Landeskog capitalized on an out-of-position Logan Thompson to fire an uncontested snap shot into the net at the 1:05 mark.
Colorado temporarily claimed the lead five minutes later. Nicolas Roy collected a bouncing puck in the slot and beat Thompson short-side at 6:03 of the final regulation frame. Following Ovechkin’s late equalizer, the game shifted to sudden death, where Martin Necas perfectly set up Nelson for a back-door tap-in to end the contest.
Blackwood finished the night with 20 saves to help Colorado improve to a league-leading 46-13-10 record with 102 points, securing their second consecutive victory after a recent stretch of four losses in five games. Thompson stopped 21 shots for Washington. The Capitals now sit at 35-28-8 with 78 points, snapping a two-game winning streak as they continue their push for playoff positioning in the Eastern Conference.
