Government Formation in Austria
Austria’s federal president, Alexander Van der Bellen, has assigned Herbert Kickl, the leader of the far-right FPÖ party, the task of forming a new government. This decision comes after the collapse of negotiations between conservatives, social democrats, and liberals.
Meeting with Kickl
Following a meeting with Kickl, Van der Bellen stated that he has entrusted Kickl with negotiating with the popular party ÖVP to form a government coalition. The president expressed his confidence in Kickl’s ability to find viable solutions within the framework of government negotiations.
Historic First
This marks the first time in Austria’s history that the far-right FPÖ party, which won the elections on September 29 with nearly 29% of the votes, has been tasked with forming a government.
Change in ÖVP’s Stance
The ÖVP has reversed its initial rejection of cooperation with Kickl, as announced by the new conservative leader, Christian Stocker. This change in stance has paved the way for potential negotiations between the ÖVP and the FPÖ.
Background on Kickl
Kickl, a former Interior Minister, has been the leader of the FPÖ since June 2021. He has radicalized the party’s tone and discourse, rejecting measures against the coronavirus, Western support for Ukraine, and sanctions against Russia. Kickl is also critical of the EU and has close ties with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.
Protests Against Kickl
As Kickl met with Van der Bellen, hundreds of people demonstrated in front of the federal presidency, expressing their rejection and discomfort with the possibility of the FPÖ leader assuming control of the next executive.
