Austria: one dead and twelve injured in a train accident

One person was killed and 12 were injured after a train derailed near Vienna, emergency services announced on Monday (May 9). The accident occurred at the end of the day in the town of Münchendorf, south of the Austrian capital, “for unknown reasons”commented a representative of the Red Cross in the region.

A car overturned on the embankment, while another ended its race in a field near the rails. Among the wounded, “three are seriously affected and nine slightly”, said the Red Cross, adding that a hundred passengers were on board. The train was operated by the private company Raaberbahn connecting Austria with neighboring Hungary.

Fatal accidents are rare in this alpine country of nine million inhabitants, a member of the European Union. In February 2018, a train collision killed one person and injured 22. Two months later, 54 people were injured in another accident in Salzburg.
