South Africa made history by winning the World Test Championship 2025 final, ending their 27-year drought without an ICC title. They defeated Australia by 5 wickets, thanks to a stellar performance by Aiden Markram.
Australia’s top bowlers, Josh Hazlewood, Mitchell Starc, and Pat Cummins, couldn’t lead their team to victory. Several Australian players are to blame for this loss. Let’s take a look at who they are.
Nathan Lyon, Australia’s off-spin bowler, failed to impress in the WTC final. He bowled 34 overs across both innings but didn’t take a single wicket. Lyon’s performance was a letdown, especially since Australia needed wickets to win.
Josh Hazlewood, a pace bowler, also didn’t deliver. He only took 2 wickets in the entire match. Although he contributed with the bat in the second innings, his bowling wasn’t enough to secure a win.
Travis Head was a complete flop in the WTC final. He scored just 11 runs in the first innings and 9 runs in the second. His batting was disappointingly quiet throughout the match.
Usman Khawaja, Australia’s opening batsman, failed to make an impact. He didn’t score a single run in the first innings and only managed 6 runs in the second. If Khawaja had performed better, the outcome of the match might have been different.
Cameron Green was another Australian player who underperformed. He was dismissed by Kagiso Rabada in both innings, scoring just 4 runs in the first and none in the second. Green’s batting was a major letdown for Australia.
