ATP Bastad: Jaime Faria Eliminated by Andrea Pellegrino in Three Sets

Jaime Faria

Young Portuguese talent Jaime Faria faced a classic tennis battle on the clay courts of Bastad, Sweden. The ATP 250 tournament saw the 21-year-old eliminated in the first round on Tuesday. He put up a strong fight but ultimately fell to Italian qualifier Andrea Pellegrino in three sets.

Faria, ranked 115th in the world and the second-highest Portuguese player, started the match with impressive control. He quickly took the first set, winning it 6-2. Things looked promising for a smooth path into the next round.

However, the momentum shifted dramatically after the opening set. The match ended after one hour and 47 minutes, with Pellegrino claiming the win through sets of 2-6, 6-2, and 6-3.

A key moment arrived early in the second set. Faria had three crucial break points in the second game, a golden opportunity to take command of the match. But he couldn’t convert any of them. That missed chance proved to be a turning point, as he never truly regained control of the match from that point on.

This marks another tough outing for Faria in an ATP Tour main draw event. His last victory at this level came back in February, when he reached the quarterfinals of the ATP 250 in Santiago. The young player is undoubtedly looking to break this pattern and find his winning stride again soon.

On the other side of the net, Andrea Pellegrino, ranked 139th, earned his spot in the second round. He will now face Tallon Griekspoor of the Netherlands, who is currently ranked 29th in the world. Meanwhile, another Portuguese player, Nuno Borges, will be aiming to defend his title at this very same Bastad event.
