The Spanish team had beaten Milan three games in a row in the Champions League, including a 2-1 in Italy in their first meeting of this edition.
Atlético had only lost twice in their last 31 European games at their stadium and have been among the top 16 in the tournament in nine of their last 11 appearances in the competition.
