UK Athletics Federation and Former Sports Director Face Manslaughter Charges
The UK Athletics Federation and its former sports director, Keith Davies, have been accused of manslaughter in connection with the death of Paralympic athlete Abdullah Hayayei. The incident occurred in 2017 when a metal cage fell on Hayayei during training, causing fatal head injuries.
The Crown Prosecution Service has authorized the charges after reviewing evidence provided by the Metropolitan Police Service. The UK Athletics Federation is accused of involuntary manslaughter and violating the Health and Safety at Work law, while Davies faces charges of gross negligence manslaughter.
Circumstances Surrounding the Incident
Hayayei, a F34 class Paralympic athlete, was training in London on July 11, 2017, in preparation for the Paralympic World Championships. The incident occurred when a hammer cage fell on him, striking him on the head. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Upcoming Court Appearance
The UK Athletics Federation and Davies are scheduled to appear in court on January 31 at the Westminster Court, where the case will be discussed.
