At Least 39 Dead, 68 Injured, and Eight Missing in Gang Clashes in Port-au-Prince, Haiti

Al menos 39 muertos, 68 heridos y ocho desaparecidos en enfrentamientos entre bandas en Puerto Príncipe, Haití

At least 39 people have died, 68 have been wounds and eight have disappeared in clashes between the ‘400 Mawozo’ and ‘Chen Mechan’ gangs in recent weeks, north and northeast of Port-au-Prince, Haiti.

Haitian Civil Protection, in collaboration with the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), has updated this Thursday the data on the violence between armed gangs that took place between April 24 and May 3 in the neighborhoods of Croix des Bouquets, the Plaine du Cul de sac, in Cité Soleil and Bel Air.

The organizations have warned that at least 9,000 people have fled their homes and 48 schools, five medical centers and eight public markets have had to close their doors in the Haitian capital, Port-au-Prince.

The report has also criticized the police action that "has failed to restore order in neighborhoods affected by gang violence"as reported by the Alterpresse news agency.

For its part, the Haitian Working Group on Security (GTS) requested at the end of April "urgently" the Prime Minister, Ariel Henry, to declare a state of emergency for a month, following clashes between armed gangs in Port-au-Prince.

In this context, the Haitian news agency warned that the band ‘400 Mawozo’ which is considered one of the most powerful on the island, specializing in kidnapping large groups for ransom, was also operating in the ‘Croix des Bouquets’ neighborhood, northeast of Port-au-Prince, and is trying to extend its dominance.

Haiti is going through a crisis situation. From the assassination of the president, Jovenel Moise, on July 7, the always turbulent political and economic situation in Haiti was hit even harder. Soon the power vacuum degenerated into a security crisis, with daily murders and kidnappings, especially in large areas of the capital.

In addition, Prime Minister Ariel Henry’s term officially ended on February 7, which has increased the crisis of legitimacy in the country and the economic problems.
