According to the state news agency Xinhua today, the explosion occurred at around 8:40 p.m. (12:40 GMT) on Wednesday on a busy street in the Xingqing district of Yinchuan, due to a gas leak at a restaurant specializing in barbecue,
In addition to the 31 deaths, seven other people were injured and were taken to a local hospital.
According to the agency, the causes of the accident are under investigation.
