At least 20 dead after a bus plunged into a ravine in Peru

Caracas.- At least 20 people died when a bus plunged down a 300-meter-high ravine in the Andean region of Ancash in northern Peru, authorities reported on Tuesday.

“The accident left 20 dead and 6 injured,” the Ancash Regional Emergency Operations Center said in a statement.

La Perla de Altomayo’s company vehicle skidded on a remote country road in the Cusca district of Corongo province on Monday.

Rescue efforts for the victims continue in the difficult-to-access area at an altitude of over 3,250 meters.

“The road is in terrible condition, completely hollow, these are the consequences,” Carlos Pinedo, mayor of Yanac, a town near the accident site, told local press.

The police have not provided any information about the causes of the accident.

In Peru, accidents on roads occur frequently due to excessive speed, poor road conditions, lack of signage and lack of control by authorities.

On September 19, a bus falling down a hillside in the Huancavelica region of southern Peru killed 25 people.
