At least 17 dead in India railway bridge collapse

The collapse of a railway bridge under construction this Wednesday left at least 17 workers dead and a significant number missing in Sairang, near Aizawl, in the state of Mizoram (northeast), India.

The head of government of the region, Zoramthanga, said on the social network X: “I offer my deepest condolences to all the affected families and wish the injured a speedy recovery.”

Zoramthanga also thanked the residents of the area “who came in large numbers to help with the rescue operations.”

Likewise, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is currently in South Africa to attend the Brics Group summit (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa), expressed regret for the accident and offered his condolences to those who suffered lost her loved ones.

The Indian leader’s office stated that “rescue operations are underway and all possible assistance is being provided to those affected”.

The government source also said more than $2,400 will be paid to the family of the deceased and $600 to the injured workers.
