At 87, Tommy Recco, the oldest detainee in France, filed his 21st request for release

Incarcerated in the Borgo remand center (Haute-Corse), Joseph-Thomas aka “Tommy” Recco, 87, made his 21st request for release. The oldest detainee in France was sentenced in 1983 to life imprisonment for two triple murders.

In prison since 1980, the serial killer highlights his age and various medical reasons to justify this request, reported Point. The judges are due to render their decision on November 4.

Joseph-Thomas Recco has already made several requests for early release in the past. The last was rejected on July 7, 2020 by the sentencing chamber of the Bastia court of appeal. The octogenarian challenged the first instance judgment, dating from December 2019, which had already rejected his request for suspension of sentence.

Recco was sentenced to life imprisonment in June 1983 by the Var Assize Court in Draguignan for two triple murders that he has always denied: that of three cashiers in a supermarket in Béziers (Hérault) on December 22 1979, and that of a girl, her father and one of their neighbors, committed to Carqueiranne (Var) on January 18, 1980.

pardoned by General De Gaulle

In 1962, he had already been sentenced to death for the murder of his godfather but, pardoned by General De Gaulle, his sentence had been commuted to life imprisonment. He was released in 1977.

According to a 2016 prison administration report reported by Le Point, Tommy Recco remains a dangerous individual whose continued detention remained “the best guarantee of prevention”. Especially since the octogenarian has never expressed regret and has continued to assert his innocence.

Among the many people who wish to keep him in detention is his son, Paul-Louis Recco. In July 2020, he told Ouest-France that his father would “do more bullshit” if he found his freedom. “He has only one idea in mind: to take revenge on those who denounced him,” he said.
