ASUS Unveils ROG Xbox Ally Portable Console

The wait is over for gamers. ASUS has just unveiled two new handheld devices: the ROG Xbox Ally and the ROG Xbox Ally X. These powerful machines were developed in collaboration with Xbox, building on the strengths of the Windows system while addressing issues found in previous Windows-based handheld gaming devices.

Let’s dive into the specs. The ASUS ROG Xbox Ally features a stunning 7-inch IPS LCD display with a 1080p resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate, ensuring smooth motion and vibrant colors. The screen is also protected by Corning Gorilla Glass Victus, providing durability and scratch resistance.

Under the hood, the device is equipped with an AMD Ryzen Z2 A processor, designed specifically for gaming, along with RDNA 2 graphics architecture, 16GB of RAM, 512GB of storage, and a 60Wh battery. The device also includes a USB-C port that supports USB 3.2 Gen 2 and DisplayPort 2.1.

For those seeking even more power, the ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X offers premium features, including an AMD Ryzen Z2 Extreme processor with a clock speed of 3.3-5.1GHz, a larger 80Wh battery, 24GB of RAM, 1TB of storage, USB 4.0, and Thunderbolt 4.

Both devices support expandable storage via MicroSD cards, M.2 2280 SSD storage, Wi-Fi 6E, and Bluetooth 5.4. They also feature fast charging with 65W support.

On the software side, the devices have been optimized to provide a seamless Xbox gaming experience on the go, addressing a common issue with previous Windows-based handheld gaming devices where game windows didn’t always fit the screen properly. The result is a full-screen gaming experience that takes advantage of the device’s capabilities.

The ASUS ROG Xbox Ally devices run on Windows but have been tweaked to minimize background activities and disable non-essential features, reducing power consumption and reallocating resources to gaming. This approach can even increase available RAM by up to 2GB, as noted by Microsoft executives.

Other notable features include a dedicated Xbox button for quick access to the Game Bar and the ASUS Armory Crate app, which allows for hardware monitoring and control. Perhaps most excitingly, both devices can access Steam, one of the largest game platforms in the world.

With these powerful handheld devices, ASUS and Xbox are poised to revolutionize mobile gaming, offering an unparalleled experience that combines the best of both worlds.
