Asian Cup can be played in Sri Lanka, Pakistan can boycott tournament

The Asia Cup 2023 in the midst of the IPL has been in the headlines constantly these days. India refused to travel to Pakistan for the tournament. In such a situation, the option of a neutral place came to the fore. Now a report in Indian Express claims that Sri Lanka may host the next Asian Cup. The Asian Cricket Council (ACC) is ready to change the tournament for Pakistan. BCCI Secretary Jai Shah had already made it clear that the Indian cricket team will not go to Pakistan for security reasons.

The final decision on the venue of the tournament can be made later this month. Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Afghanistan are expected to support the initiative to host the event on the island nation. Pakistan’s participation in the tournament is still unclear as reports indicate it may boycott the event. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) continues to show interest in holding the tournament on home ground. BCCI is receiving support from other ACC member countries, this decision appears to be a formality at this time.

After the BCCI refused to travel to Pakistan for the tournament citing lack of government clearance, the PCB proposed a hybrid model for hosting the Asian Cup, where India’s matches would be held in Dubai only. It is very hot in the United Arab Emirates in September. Oman had also offered to host the tournament during a recent informal meeting of ACC members, but given the circumstances, Sri Lanka was considered an ideal venue.

Teams are not prepared to put players at risk in extreme heat. Sri Lanka Cricket, on the other hand, expressed interest in hosting the tournament. The ACC is set to reach a final decision in the coming weeks. If Sri Lanka runs the 2023 Asia Cup, Dambulla and Pallekele may be the venues. Colombo usually sees the monsoon season in September. This may have an impact on the next World Cup. Reports coming from Pakistan indicated that the PCB will not be able to participate in the event if the Asian Cup is withdrawn from the country. If he skips that tournament, he will also cast doubt on his participation in the World Cup, which will be hosted by India in October-November.
