Asia Cup 2023: Shakib Al Hasan will captain Bangladesh at Asia Cup, BCB President announced

Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) President Nazmul Hasan has insisted Shakib Al Hasan is his preferred candidate for ODI captaincy at the upcoming 2023 Asia Cup after Tamim Iqbal ruled out with a back injury.

We would like to announce that Tamim Iqbal has decided to step down from the captaincy after recently coming out of retirement. However, Shakib is currently captain of the Test and T20 teams. By early 2011, Shakib had taken command of the team.

Earlier, Nazmul Hasan hinted that Liton Das can captain if Tamim is unavailable for the Asian Cup. But now, after stepping down as Tamim’s captain, Shakib’s experience puts him at the forefront of the captaincy race.

Speaking to reporters in Dhaka, Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) President Nazmul Hasan said: “We haven’t talked about the captaincy yet. We need to pause and think about it. Like I said, if it was a series.” “We could have gone with the vice-captain (Litton Das), but now we have to think long-term.”

He further added: “There are two problems. If we think long-term, that’s one thing. But the World Cup is also just around the corner and the pressure from the World Cup is enormous. If I elect a new captain, I don’t know if he can withstand the pressure of the World Cup or not. Then we have to think about it too. If we choose someone long-term and they’re not available after a year, what will we do? “So we have to look at these things. They need to be discussed.”

The BCB President continued: “Shakib is first choice but can you say he will play for two years? We don’t know, so we need to know his plan and talk to the board. I think the easiest is.” Substitute is Shakib and that’s not a problem.
