Born on September 8, 1933, to the esteemed Pandit Dinanath Mangeshkar, she grew into a star who needed no introduction. She entered the music world following her elder sister, Lata Mangeshkar, but faced personal challenges that shaped her unique path. While she built an impressive singing career, her personal life saw many twists and turns.
Finding Her Voice Early
Life took a sudden, tough turn for Asha Bhosle when her father passed away. She was just nine years old. This brought Asha, her elder sister Lata Mangeshkar, and their family from Pune to Mumbai. Both sisters quickly began singing in films to support their family. Asha’s first recorded song was for the Marathi film ‘Mazha Bal’ in 1943. She then sang “Sawan Aaya” for the Bollywood movie ‘Chunariya’ in 1948. From those early days, she has remained a powerful voice in the music world, staying active to this very day.
A Rebellious Heart at Sixteen
As both Lata and Asha were making their mark in music, Asha made a bold move. At just 16, she eloped with Ganpat Rao Bhosle, who was Lata Mangeshkar’s secretary. He was 20 years older than her. This love marriage did not sit well with Lata and the rest of their family. It caused a significant and long-lasting rift between the famous sisters. Asha later shared in an interview that her husband’s family was very traditional. They struggled to accept a singing star in their household. She recounted a painful moment when, pregnant with her youngest son Anand, she was asked to return to her family home. After 11 challenging years and three children, her marriage to Ganpat Rao came to an end.
After her first marriage broke, love found its way back into Asha Bhosle’s life. In 1980, she married the talented music composer and singer R.D. Burman. He was six years her junior. Together, they created some of music’s most iconic and beloved songs. Sadly, R.D. Burman passed away in 1994, leaving behind a rich musical legacy shared with Asha.

For a period, whispers went around the music industry about a professional rivalry between Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle.
