A’s pummel Jacob deGrom and the Mets

Jacob deGrom pitched just four innings, his shortest pitch of the season, as he was thrashed by the Oakland Athletics, who beat the New York Mets 10-4 on Saturday.

DeGrom (5-3) gave up five runs and walked four — the worst start since 2019 by the two-time NL Cy Young Award-winning pitcher. The Mets squandered an opportunity to extend their lead atop the Eastern Division.

Never before has deGrom’s righty faced the A’s.

In his last three starts, deGrom has allowed 11 earned runs over 15 innings. The four walks doubled his previous total for the season.

The Mets lost for just the second time in their last nine games. They began the day with a 2 1/2-game lead over last World Series champion Atlanta.

The win went to Ken Waldichuk (1-2), with five solid innings.

For the Mets, Puerto Ricans Francisco Lindor 3-2 with an RBI, Tomás Nido 3-0. Venezuelans Eduardo Escobar 4-0, Luis Guillorme 2-1.

For the Athletics, Puerto Rican Vimael Machín 3-2 with three runs scored. The Dominicans Dermis García 4-1 with a run scored and two RBIs, Christian ache 2-0. Colombian Jordan Diaz 3-2.
