Imagine playing professional football, only to find your dad on the opposing sideline, coaching another team in the very same league. That’s the unique path Artur Jorge, a 30-year-old central defender, is taking. He’s just inked a deal with Qatar’s Al-Shahania for one season. This means he’ll be a rival to his father, also named Artur Jorge, who coaches Al-Rayyan in the same league.
This isn’t the first time the two have faced off. They once stood on opposite sides when the elder Artur Jorge was managing Sporting Braga, and the younger one was playing for Farense. Now, their football journey brings them together again in the Qatari championship. Last season, Al-Shahania finished seventh, while Artur Jorge’s father led Al-Rayyan to a fifth-place finish.
The defender is no stranger to new surroundings. He spent the last two seasons with Farense. Before that, his career took him across Portugal and beyond. He grew up through Sporting Braga’s academy, even reaching their main squad. In Portugal, he also played for Vilaverdense, Freamunde, Vitória de Setúbal, and Moreirense. This move to Qatar marks his fourth adventure abroad. He’s previously played for Steaua Bucharest in Romania, Apoel Nicosia in Cyprus, and Al Bataeh in the United Arab Emirates.

Artur Jorge is one of several players departing Farense after last season. Of those who won’t be returning to the club’s home ground, only defender Tomás Ribeiro has an undecided future. He might be heading overseas as well. Meanwhile, forward Tomané is still under contract with Farense, but he could also move on before the transfer window closes.
