Uruguayan Mayor Sentenced for Failure to Report Irregularities
The mayor of Artigas, Pablo Caram, has been convicted of failure by public officials to report irregularities or possible crimes in the public administration. The sentence refers to the payment of irregular overtime in the Municipality of Artigas.
Additional Convictions
Rodolfo Caram, the mayor’s cousin and head of the Municipality, and his partner were also charged and convicted of fraud for the irregular payment of overtime during the current administration. Deputy Valentina Dos Santos, who resigned from her seat in the Legislative Branch, testified in the case.
Sentence Details
According to the correspondent, Mayor Caram was sentenced to 14 months in prison for his responsibility as the author of a crime of failure by public officials to report crimes. However, the prison sentence will be replaced by probation, with the obligation to carry out community service for four months, two hours per week. The sentence does not include disqualification from holding public office, so Caram will be able to continue in his position as mayor of Artigas. It also does not include a fine.
Agreement Reached
The sentence was reached through an abbreviated agreement with the Departmental Prosecutor’s Office, which means that responsibility was assumed for the crime committed.
