Arkea and Nairo Quintana give up the Giro d’Italia

It was an open secret but this Friday it was officially announced: Nairo Quintana’s Arkéa-Samsic will not compete in the next edition of the Giro d’Italia. This has been confirmed by the team manager Emmanuel Hubert, who has also revealed that the Arkéa will be present in the Tour de France and the Vuelta a España.

Arkéa-Samsic and Alpecin-Fenix are the two teams that are not part of the UCI World Tour that were guaranteed their presence in all the top category races of cycling by finishing second and first respectively in the UCI Pro Team rankings in 2021.

In a statement released by the team, Emmanuel Hubert justified the decision and hinted at the presence of Nairo Quintana in the Tour and the Vuelta, something that would limit the invitations that the Spanish round can deliver. “We deeply respect the Giro d’Italia and the RCS society and its history, but unfortunately this year we will not contest the Giro, as the second position allowed us last year in the UCI Pro Team ranking. We will only ride two grand tours: the Tour de France and the Vuelta a España, in which we will be with our leaders and our most experienced cyclists.”

Hubert also wanted to highlight what Arkéa’s big goal is this year. “2022 is a very important season for the history of our team and we have established a strategy to achieve our great goal, which is to climb the UCI World Tour. In any case, we hope that Arkéa-Samsic can return to the roads of the Giro d’Italia with the aim of being noticed by our climbers and sprinters. We will not be going to the Giro d’Italia this year and it has been a difficult decision to make, but I hope that our paths will cross again very soon.”
