Arizona beats the Cubs in 10 innings, Villar connects two hits

Daulton Varsho hit a three-run double in the 10th inning and scored on a wild throw by Andrelton Simmons, who made an error, as the Arizona Diamondbacks rallied to beat the Chicago Cubs 7-6 on Saturday.

Arizona had only one hit off starter Justin Steele, but stretched out in front of the bullpen with a three-run attack in the eighth that necessitated extra innings.

Rowan Wick (1-1) accepted Varsho’s double.

Arizona has won three straight after snapping a six-game losing streak Thursday in the series opener. Varsho finished 3-for-5 with three RBIs and is second to the Diamondbacks in doubles with eight on the season.

Diamondbacks relievers Joe Mantiply, JB Wendelken and Ian Kennedy (3-2) combined for a pair of scoreless innings before Mark Melancon took the mound in the 10th for his ninth save of the season.

For the Diamondbacks, the Venezuelans Yonny Hernández 4-0, David Peralta 3-1. The Dominican Ketel Marte 5-1 with two runs scored. The Dominican Geraldo Perdomo 3-1.

For the Cubs, Venezuelans Willson Contreras 2-1, Rafael Ortega 1-0 with a run scored, Ildemaro Vargas 4-0. Dominican Jonathan Villar 5-2 with an RBI.
